Fifty years of full sherry cask maturation – split across two high-class indie bottlings with beautiful labels and even more beautiful whiskies inside! That’s how I would describe DeinWhisky.de’s new Inchmurrin duo in a nutshell. If you have not heard of Inchmurrin before, let me tell you that it is one of many varieties produced at the no-limits Highland whiz-kid distillery Loch Lomond. The ScotchWhisky.com website describes it as “a whisky that is typically lightly floral and grassy” and whose “intensely fruity new make spirit [is made] using unique pot stills”. The two sister releases, which DeinWhisky.de realized together with Sansibar Whisky, both contain liquids that were originally distilled a quarter of a century ago in 1998, and then put to rest for two-and-a-half decades in top-quality sherry casks. One of these time-honored vessels held Oloroso before, the other PX. Both times the final product turned out to be exceptional. The long ripening time, the rich wood, and the good spirit fell together to produce, in each case, a dram of distinct character and high complexity. There’s just one minor catch though: At 219 Euro a piece, these two Inchmurrins are a bit over my usual limit. Yet, I must admit that I feel a little tempted anyway. After all, both the Inchmurrin 1998/2023 Oloroso and the Inchmurrin 1998/2023 PX struck all the right chords with me when I tried them, leaving me deeply impressed and longing for more!

Inchmurrin 1998/2023 Oloroso Sherry Cask –
White Label by DeinWhisky.de & Sansibar Whisky
(Single Malt Scotch Whisky • Oloroso cask • 52.2% • 223 bottles)

The color is caramel brown, and the nose is supreme! After 25 years of sleep, the fumes are mellowed down and evened out. Yet, the bouquet has kept its liviliness throughout ages. It brims with orange jelly, raspberry squash, and sugared brambles – spread out over cocoa nibs, pecan nuts, and tea leaves. Furthermorse, my nostrils also register a citrusy spritziness and a yoghurt freshness. In the mouth, this dignified dram from Loch Lomond Distillery feels weighty and creamy. It produces lots of fruit notes (orange, apricot, lemon, and banana) alongside a variety of perfumed, velvety, and aromatic sensations. The many different flavors are in fantastic balance; they harmoniously cuddle with each other under a thin, almost unrecognizable blanket of fleeting smoke. During the satisfying and ongoing aftertaste, the spirit freshens up a little. As parting gifts, I am given a grant mix of cherry-flavored cough candy, sugared bramble jelly, fine-grated citrus zest, light-colored wine gum, and dripping-with-juice grape.

Inchmurrin 1998/2023 PX Sherry Cask –

As I delve head-first, or rather nose-first, into the darkness, I smell total PX glory: berry, raisin, syrup, marmelade, and alc-drenched cocktail cherry. Left and right of this sweet-as-a-treat oppulence, there are additional aromas that add to the depth, most notably rosehip tea, quince jelly, leather purse, and cushion dust. The first sip is oily and oh-so-delicate! A sugared-cherry-kinda sweetness coats the mouth. It is accompanied by burnt cake, soft licorice, waxy peel, polished wood, and pureed blackberry. The natural cask strength of 51.1 per cent ABV is perfectly integrated – there’s no burn or bite in this Inchmurrin 25yo, just taste! The long finish starts off dark and roasty. As it goes on and on, it turns fresher and fruitier with red berries on the one hand and tropical fruits on the other. The more the other sensations fade, the higher the pineapples n’ peaches n’ mangoes rise to the top from underneath.
