For many craft distilleries from the Nordic countries, setting foot abroad isn’t all too easy. No doubt: Their locally-sourced, hand-made whiskies are truly excellent in many cases. But the prices – which usually lie beyond the 100 Euro barrier for a 0.5 litre bottle of comparatively young spirit – often feel a bit steep for drammers from countries with different pricing structures. To react to this, Danish boutique distillery Fary Lochan has now released Saeson 1, it’s first-ever NAS expression coming in a nicely designed 0.7 litre bottle and selling for round about 80 bucks. Composed from both ex-Bourbon whiskey barrels and Oloroso sherry casks, the drop comes with an elevated strength of 47 per cent ABV. And it embodies pretty much everything that Fary Lochan is loved for: the heavy body and oily mouthfeel, the rich smell and taste, the great attention to detail, and that unique something you only find in bottlings from this small, picturesque Heart-of-Jutland-based production site. If you wanted to own a bottle of Fary Lochan for long, but always found ’em to be a little above your budget, here’s your chance to finally introduce it to your whisky cabinet!

Eye: Golden, bright, and delicate.
Nose: This new expression by Fary Lochan starts off wonderfully fruity with chewy apples, jellied lemons, and yellow plums. It then follows up on this with the heaviness shortcrust pastry and the crunchiness of salted peanuts. Furthermore, it produces a big green note that has me thinking of aloe vera leaves. Plus hey n’ crops.
Mouth: Mouthfeel-wise, Saeson 1 gives an excellent example of Fary Lochan’s signature oiliness (a quality brought forth by the distillery’s tiny, onion-shaped Forsyths stills). And taste-wise, it’s also rich with many classic Fary Lochan notes, such as pan cakes, ginger cookies, and pear bites as well as various grassy, mineral, and fruity notes. And again that fingerlicking good salty trail mix flavor – this time with lotsa sweet raisins in there, too.
Finish: The nice-length finish offers a wealth of tongue-pleasing flavors: bright fruits, sweet pastry, whipped cream, crunchy nuts, fresh mint leaves, barley sugar, and vanilla milk … once drunken, this screams for instant repetition!
