With demand for Asian whiskies at an all-time high, malts from the Far East are no longer insiders’ tips. Besides the “big two” from Japan, Nikka and Suntory, there is another company that is on everybody’s lips, namely Kavalan from Taiwan. Formed in 2005, the Kavalan distillery belongs to the King Car Group, which also produces a variety of other beverages ranging from tea and coffee to still water and energy drinks. The Kavalan Single Malt Whisky is part of their four-part band of standard whiskies, whose rockin’ line-up is completed by the Concertmaster, the Podium and the Conductor. It comes without an age statement, but its blithe and buoyant nature suggests the assumption that it did not spend too many years in the cask (which makes sense considering the fact that the Kavalan distillery has only been formed 11 years ago). If there is one thing that characterizes this nonchalant dram, it is a good deal of exotic fruits – both in the nose and on the tongue. While this makes the Kavalan Single Malt Whisky a perfect summer’s sip, it also tastes great at any other time of the year.
