When a friend told me of the enormous whisk(e)y selection the Freudenhaus St. Pauli had on offer, I knew I had to pay this place a visit soon. Located in a side-street of the (in)famous Reeperbahn, the bar (which is adjacent to a restaurant going by the same name) is easily accessible via public transportation. My girlfriend and I went there on a Saturday evening, about half an hour after it opened. The place was already quite filled, but we found seats at the counter and there might also have been a free table left. If you plan to go there with a bigger group of friends, you better make a reservation. The Freudenhaus St. Pauli itself is inviting and stylishly furnished. There is a vintage touch to the interior and the many bottles gracing the walls give it some resemblance to an alchemist’s chamber. Add to this very friendly and knowledgable barkeepers as well as a mind-blowing range of available spirits and you have a killer whisk(e)y bar that you will want to visit again and again!

Atmosphere: The medium-size bar offers seats at several tables and on the counter. Everything is neat and comfy. All in all, I found the Freudenhaus St. Pauli to be a great place to enjoy a special whisky I won’t have any other day.
Selection: They currently have 466 whiskies from all over the world on the menu, plus several hundred gins and rums. The whiskies range from standard bottlings and evergreens to limited editions and collector’s items.
Price: The prices aren’t cheap, but totally okay given the extraordinary range of whiskies you can choose from. I paid 25 Euro for 4cl of a 25-year-old Talisker in cask strength and my girlfriend paid 10 Euro for 4cl of an Islay blend named Smokehead. Along with the whisky, we got a glass of water each and a dropper in case we wanted to add water to our drams.
Service: Both barkeepers were really friendly, attentive and well-versed in the world of whisky. I gladly gave a little tip.
