GlenWyvis Batch 1 / Vintage Distillation 2019 (Review)

GlenWyvis Vintage Distillation 2019 Batch One (Single Malt Highland Scotch Whisky Tasting Notes BarleyMania Blog)

I always like it when a young whisky takes a certain pride in its age rather than trying to hide it. After all, the time spent in the barrel is but one of many factors that influence the outcome of the final product. In fact, one might argue that the chosen ingredients, the applied techniques, and the selected casks are just as crucial to the spirit’s development as the maturation time. Today, I am happy to introduce a bottling that definitely backs up this claim: Vintage Distillation 2019 from crowd-funded GlenWyvis Distillery in the Scottish Highlands. With the year of production “2019” prominently placed on the box and on the label, this limited edition of 12,000 pieces leaves not much room for interpretation, saying loud and proud: “Yes, I’m a young whisky. But hey, that ain’t a bad thing, I got a ton to offer anyway.” If these words sound good to you, get yourself a bottle and let GlenWyvis’ well-composed and well-orchestrated single malt Scotch whisky show you what it has in store. But give it time. At first, this dainty drop might appear a little withdrawn and reluctant. Yet, when you delve deeper into it, you will discover a richness of highly intriguing smells and flavors!

Eye: Light-colored.
Nose: Upon first sniff, this young Highlander’s bouquet is more on the subtle side. Give it a moment, however, and it unfolds in a lovely way. To me, the most prominent scents are sweet honey, zesty lemon, soft grass, and lots n’ lots of delicate fruits: cocktail cherries, canned peaches, overripe bananas, juicy grapes, and squashed kiwis – with pinch of powdered nutmeg spread over ’em.
Palate: The spirit weights light to medium on the tongue. Here, it presents itself a bit less juicy and fruity than before, emphasizing more on the floral notes. Blossoming clover is one flavor that especially sticks out for me. It is accompanied, among others, by forest honey, grape peel, wine spritzer, white-choc splinters, and breakfast cereals.
Finish: The aftertaste is astringent and drying. Length-wise, I’d file it under “quick” and “fleeting”. But the sensations it leaves us with are great nonetheless. They include green apple, soft kiwi, half-ripe tangerine, and white chocolate as well as towards the very end a wee bit of wood and chalk.
