Den Engelske Pub – You’ll Never Walk Alone in Kolding (Bar)

Den Engelske Pub in Kolding in Denmark (Craft Beer Whisky Bar Review at BarleyMania Blog)

Midway throughout January, my wife Dini and I embarked on a trip to Kolding in Denmark. Our mission: To finally catch one of our favorite contemporary metal bands live, namely Iotunn. Before we saw the super-epic five-piece on the final night of their “Kinship” mini tour, however, we had some time to kill in town. Luckily, there was a bar close-by that sounded like a ton of fun, going by the name of Den Engelske Pub. As a busy and crowded sports bar, it turned out to be quite different from a classic whisky bar but at least in my opinion, that totally contributed to the place’s charme and appeal! Everything about Den Engelske Pub was really down-to-earth and easy-going. There were football matches flickering on the screens, there was music blasting from the speakers, there was laughter and chatter dispersing from the tables. And there was amazing beer flowing out of the taps and superb whisky waiting to be discovered on the shelves! If you’re either a craft beer fan or a whisky lover looking to have one helluva time in Kolding, Den Engelske Pub sure as hell is a place you shouldn’t miss!

Atmosphere: As already said, the atmosphere at Den Engelske Pub is quite a bit more loud n’ lively than the atmosphere you’d find in a traditional dramming joint. If you’re in the mood for this, you’ll have an absolute blast there. One nice detail about the interior: As a football fan, I really enjoyed checking out the match-worn shirts and other memorabilia displayed on the walls and ceiling. And I certainly didn’t mind the games shown on the different screens either.
Selection: All in all, they have over 250 whiskies on the menu, spanning across all regions, styles, and types. Whether you fancy a core range bottling of a popular distillery or a single cask release from a specialist indie bottler, I’m sure you’ll find something nice at Den Engelske Pub. And if you want to pair your dram with a cool beer, they got over 20 different ones on tap (plus many more canned and bottled).
Price: When I was there, the menu was being updated, so I couldn’t get a complete overview of the bottles and prices. But I was told that the cheapest drams started at 35 Danish kroner (4.70 Euro), whereas the most expensive ones cost significantly more. For reference: When I asked for a dram for 100 kroner (13 Euro), I was served an independendly released Cragganmore 19 Years Old that was distilled in 1989 and bottled in 2008. And damn, that was a mighty fine sip!
Service: The staff was good-humored and knowledgeable, recommending great stuff and serving well-poured drinks. While I must say that I didn’t speak to them that much, they still did their part to ensure that Dini and I felt super-fine and comfy at Den Engelkse Pub.
