Mackmyra Vinterrök (Review)

Mackmyra Vinterrök (Barley Mania Swedish Svensk Whisky Single Malt Seasons)

Another Sunday in advent, another opportunity to have a winter’s dram. Today, my drink of choice is the Vinterrök by Swedish distilling wizards Mackmyra. Released to the market in 2015 as part of the distillery’s Seasons series superseding the completed Special range, it is one of two seasonal bottlings Mackmyra launches each year. As the name, which translates to “Winter Smoke”, suggests, the Vinterrök does not belong to the line of drinks the distillery produces for the summer months. Instead, it is a sturdy x-mas whisky that brings all the soot into your glas, which Santa’s fleecy coat gathers as he slides down a million chimneys a night. But this wouldn’t be a Mackmyra if it was only smoke. In there, you also find perfectly placed notes of fruit, spice and wood.

Eye: Straw yellow.
Nose: A moderate apple-fruitiness covered in a thick layer of chimney soot.
Palate: One smokin’ Swede! Well-balanced vanilla notes and carefully selected spices set the stage for a punchy pack o’ peat.
Finish: Round, strong and lasting. A worthy finish to a thoroughly great dram.
