When they created their Remarkable Regional Malts range, the people at Douglas Laing wanted to offer their customers high-quality blended malts that embody the unique characteristics of the different whisky regions in Scotland. Rock Oyster represents the maritime island whiskies from Orkney, Arran, Jura and Islay. Sure, words can give you a rough idea of what a whisky from these isles tastes like. But even the most accurate description does not convey as lively an image of the headstrong character of a typical island dram as a sip of Rock Oyster does. Douglas Laing launched this Sherry Edition in summer of 2017 as the series’ third special edition. Earlier, they already released a Cask Strength Edition and an 18yo expression. This particular whisky combines salty, peaty and maritime notes with a pleasant sherry sweetness – a mixture that totally strikes the right note in my opinion.

Eye: Beautiful golden yellow.
Nose: Peat ‘n sweet with a distinct seaside character. Bold notes of peatiness are combined with the sweet aroma of the sherry and a strong saltiness. Imagine you spend your holidays in a small town at the Atlantic coast, where a glass of sherry and a bowl of red berries are served on the terrace of your hotel.
Palate: The first sip is full of red berries and sweetness. Later salt, limes and grapefruits shine through more and more. The peat is not as dominant as you might have thought after sniffing the whisky, but it is integrated very well.
Finish: Salt, pepper and sweetness as well as a nice smokiness stay on your tongue for several minutes.
