Right in time for Christmas, the good people of Weinquelle Lühmann launched their second indie bottling. Like the Caol Ila 10yo they put out in November, this one also appears under the new-found label Weinquelle’s Whisky Choice. Whereas the first release was aimed at the peatheads out there, number two targets the sherry worshipers. The 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky comes from a Secret Speyside distillery. It spent its full maturation time in a PX hogshead. This gave the dram a multilayered character that I find highly exciting – brut notes (spice, wood) meet with heavy notes (coffee, nuts), fruity notes (berries, tangerines) and sweet notes (chocolate, toffee). During the degustation, which should not be rushed, the leading aromas and flavors constantly change. This makes for a highly satisfying tasting experience that is full of surprises, twists and good moments. Slainte mhath!

Eye: The whisky presents itself in a full-hued, scintillating chestnut brown. Its legs are thick and sticky.
Nose: The first sniff is very dry – and full of woody and spicy aromas. Then a slight fruitiness joins in. I smell red berries, baked raisins, dried cherries and peeled grapefruits. I also get a few crumbled gingerbread cookies, lots of very dark chocolate and some unsugared rosehip tea. And more powdery spices!
Palate: Now the PX sweetness makes itself known. The first flavors I taste are raisins, dates, strawberries and treacle. Then follow hazelnut splinters, milk chocolate and moccachino foam. Plus some soft yellow fruits. Wood and spice are also present here, but not nearly as much as during the nosing. Also, the whisky’s character has become a more juicy and chewy now – however, the spirit still sucks the saliva out of the oral cavity when you let it bellow in your mouth long enough.
Finish: Loooong and good with strawberry, honey, walnut and buttered raisin bread. There’s also redcurrants and other berries – now sugared! – as well as caramel pudding, raspberry creme and tangerines. On top of this delicate mix, there are several spoonfuls of cocoa powder.
