Usually, the topics I tackle here on BarleyMania are fun and light-hearted. Not so today. Cause as I type, a war is raging in Europe. Ever since the first shots were fired on 24 February 2022, the sovereign state of Ukraine has been under heavy attack from Russian armed forces. And as always when there is war, people are suffering. Right now, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are fleeing the country, seeking refuge in the neighbouring states. To help these people, who have no belongings anymore except for what they carry with them, fellow drammer Sabine from London has initiated an emergency fundraiser together with her friends from Capital Whisky Club and Melody Whisky Bar.

On Tuesday, 1 March 2022 at 7.30pm GMT (yes, that’s tomorrow at 20:30 o’clock over here in Germany), there will be a hybrid event taking place both physically at Melody Whisky Bar in London and digitally via Zoom. The host of the evening is no other than The Dramble’s Matt McKay. Tickets are available via Capital Whisky Club’s website. In the course of the event, the participants will bid on charity bottles in an auction, participate in a raffle with cool prizes, and sip tasty drams together. Every penny raised will go straight to Gonzales Byass’ Marcin “The Sherry Knight” Schilling. Living close to the Polish-Ukrainian border, he currently spends his days providing the Ukranian refugees that arrive there with food, clothes, and other much-needed items. He shares regular updates from the emergency area in his Instagram story. Check it out to see directly how your kind donations are used to help people in dire need.
