Fary Lochan 7yo Virtual Edition #06 – Port & Peat (Review)

Fary Lochan 7yo Port & Peat

No matter how many top-class whiskies you drink, every now and then you will still come across a drop that manages to stand out from the rest. The last such-natured dram I had was Fary Lochan’s sixth Virtual Edition monikered Port & Peat. The 7-year-old single malt from Denmark started its journey in a peat-laden ex-Bourbon hogshead from an undisclosed Islay distillery. After four years in there, it moved into a port pipe for the second leg of its double maturation. There, it remained for a another three years. While I am sure that each of these casks on its own would have brought forth a truly excellent whisky, the combination of both knocked the ball out of the park! In Port & Peat a subtle smokiness, which comes entirely from the wood, falls together with a jam-like sweetness, a powdery spiciness, and a noticable “greenness” all painted onto the canvas of Fary Lochan’s typically voluminous, heavy-weight spirit. If you are a regular to my blog, you will know that I am madly in love with this distillery and all they do. Yet, even for Fary Lochan standards, Port & Peat is extra-amazing to me. I would, without hestitating, rank it among my top-3 FL releases of all time (alongside “Dramlet: The Dark Prince of Denmark!” for the SMWS and the triple-distilled Rum Edition Batch #01). Sadly (for me and you) or luckily (for the team) there are no bottles of Port & Peat left anymore in the online shop. In the unlikely situation that one still crosses my way, I will jump at the opportunity in a second!

Eye: Almost crimson.
Nose: Sweetest bramble jam mingles with nougat, brittle, winegum, and chimney wood to form a most amazing whole. Whereas the bouquet of this 7-year-old Danish whisky is overall pretty juicy, it also has a dryish side to it (grain husks, chocolate flakes, dried fruits). Colorwise, my first association is red (cherry and strawberry). But when I sniff on, I also get some yellow (apricot and khaki). And lotsa powdery spice, too (mostly cinnamon).
Mouth: The whisky’s so thick you can almost chew it! It brims with sea-salt caramel, squashed bramble, burnt cake, dark chocolate, and sugared coffee. As in the nose, the fruits I get on the tongue are not only “red” but also “yellow”. To me, the latter color appears in the form of canned peach topped with whipped cream. Furthernore, there’s good amounts of salted pastry and fleeting smoke. Plus a foresty quality: resin and moss and needle.
Finish: Once gulped down, Port & Peat #01 just won’t go away. It leaves behind an amazing mix of flavors: Redcurrants drenched in limoncello. English marmelade spread upon oak staves. Pineapple-flavored gummi bears clouded in cigarette puff. And fir cones wrapped in tangerine peel.

  1. Sounds fabulous!! I’ve so far only managed to try 1 Fary Lochan at The Whisky Show in London – completely impressed!!!! I managed catch hold of another (Moscatel) which I’m really looking forward to the right opportunity to try! However this Port & Peat sounds spectacular! Many thanks for sharing your experience.

    1. Cheers, Carissa. I’m really happy to read that you enjoyed your first Fary Lochan so much. Since I first visited the distillery 5-or-so years ago, Thomas and the distillery team have really become friends. So I’m always extra excited when someone knows and likes their whisky, too. Are you still living in Germany? If so, P&P wouldn’t be too much & there would also not be any trouble with customs … so I could easily send you a few samples of both distillery releases and indie bottlings from Fary Lochan if you liked to try ’em.
