While Gordon & MacPhail-owned Benromach is one of Scotland’s smaller distilleries in regard to its yearly output, the makers of “The Classic Speyside Single Malt Whisky” are giants in the fields of craftmanship and innovation. Never shy to try something new, they have constantly expanded their core range over the years. Today, they provide a broad selection of spirits, offering something for almost everybody. If you are a traditionalist, you will probably go with Benromach’s fantastic 10yo and 15yo. If you like it wild and untamed, the high strength powerhouse 100 Proof will most likely be your dram of choice. And even if you normally turn towards the isle of Islay for your favorite pours, you will find delight in Benromach’s soot-laden tar monster Peat Smoke. The whisky I am reviewing today, however, falls into yet another category. Benromach Organic is the first Scotch to sport the UK Soil Association’s green leaf logo on both the bottle and the tube – an insignia you are only allowed to use if every step of your production meets strict standards for animal welfare, environmental protection and sustainable development. The careful choice of the ingredients, the attentive monitoring of the distillation process and the strong focus on handicraft make the Organic a particularly clean, mellow and pleasant whisky that reveals its outstanding quality with every single drop ensnaring your taste buds.
Eye: Freshly waxed pine wood.
Nose: Oh, what a beautiful nose. Benromach’s Organic starts with ripe plums and juicy orange slices. Then, there’s marzipan and shortbread. And ultimately, we also get to smell the fine aromas of violets and fir needles.
Palate: Superbly balanced and wonderfully rounded! When this light, smooth and readily accessible whisky bewets your tongue, pleasing notes of warm pear tart, roasted almond splinters and creamy caramel fudge unfold. Additionally, there is also a spoonful of apricot jam and maybe even a thimble of honey.
Finish: The Organic’s delicate finish is fruity, nutty, spicy and of good length – a delightful ending to an excellent dram!
